Here is the information that you'll need to know if you're thinking of getting married here at S Michaels, Kelburn.
First contact:
Are you interested in celebrating your wedding here at S Michael’s Kelburn? Our historic church stands on Upland Road
Kelburn, at the city end of the Kelburn village.
The church is open daily. You can look inside and see if you like our church.
If you wish to talk about having the wedding here, please contact the Vicar (Ph +64 4 934-9338).
Booking ahead:
The priest of Kelburn is normally the one who takes a wedding service at the Kelburn church. However if you are from
another church and would like your own pastor to officiate at your wedding here in S Michael’s, you are welcome to
discuss that with the priest of Kelburn. Contact the priest to see if the church is available at the time and day on which
you hope to be married.
Facilities:
The church seats 120 comfortably. A larger number can fit in if you like to have people sitting around you up the front
less formally.
If the weather is cold, the gas heating can be put on in good time before the ceremony.
We have a good quality pipe organ (with pedal board), and also a modern up-right piano. Should you wish to use recorded music, we have a quality CD player and microphone system.
Music:
Do you wish to have songs for all to sing at your wedding? A list of song and hymn titles is provided in the Anglican
prayerbook on page 806.
Do you wish to have an organist to play at the wedding? The church organ may be hired for the occasion, for a small fee which goes towards the tuning and maintenance costs.
Anglican church members will be invited to contact our parish organist Mr Nigel Williams (Ph +64 4 971-0580) to see whether he is available. Nigel can advise you about choices for music before, during, and after the ceremony. He has a cassette tape with a range of music for you to consider.
Flowers:
Do you wish to have flowers or other decorations in church? You will be asked to contact the flower guild convenor
Mrs Beryl Igglesden who will advise you about various options.
You may wish to bring in your own florist, or to involve your own friends and family. You may wish to leave the arrangements to the flower guild here at the church.

If not in use by other community groups, the hall and its kitchen can be hired at low rates. Crockery and cutlery for 100 people, and eight long trestle tables are available. Contact the priest for arrangements.
Fees:
The following sums are negotiable. If you have financial constraints, we do not wish you to turn aside from the happiness
of having a church wedding. Talk privately to the priest about that.
After discussion with the priest and agreement that the church and priest are available for your wedding, you will be
asked to pay a Booking Fee. This is a church donation of $250, used for the repairs and maintenance of our Heritage

Preparing the service:
The Anglican prayerbook has a rich variety of resources. See pages 779 to 808 in the prayerbook. Copies can be purchased
at the Anglican Centre, Eccleston Hill off Hill St in Thorndon.
You may choose from any one of the three optional services, and within each service, you may choose the specific prayers and words that you find most appropriate.
If you wish to be married by the priest at S Michael’s Kelburn, he will go through the chosen service with you. The aim is to make it special for you both, and to involve your friends and families in the ceremony itself.
Please contact the priest if any further questions arise.
GOD bless you as you plan for this important day.
The Vicar
Do you wish to be baptised yourself? Do you wish to present your child for holy Baptism?
The priest will meet you and go through the service with you and discuss the meaning of what you are doing and what God is giving you.
If the candidate is an adult, a suitable preparation will be discussed so that the person is confident about their re-birth into the Christian community.
If the candidate is a child, the parents will need to find three god-parents, Christians who are willing to support the child as they grow up as human beings and as Christians.
S Michael's baptismal font is carved from polished Takaka marble.
The sacrament (holy rite) of Baptism we celebrate on Sundays at the sung eucharist. The
baptism happens at the centre of the sung eucharist. This central Christian service begins
at 10:00 am and finishes an hour later. Parents, family, and friends are all invited to
join the celebration of the new birth of the person. At the climax of the celebration we
welcome those already baptised to join us around the Lord’s table for the sacred meal of
the holy communion.
The baptism service has several distinctive features. In the context of our faith and the church’s prayer, we pour the water of baptism over the head of the person. From the womb of the font emerges a new child of God. We sign the Christian mark, the Cross on the forehead of the newly baptised person. For this we use holy oils, a mixture from an ancient bible recipe; the bishop consecrates these holy oils each Holy Week. We give a small candle to the new Christian. This marks our conviction that the Holy Spirit carries the light of Christ into the life of the new Christian. This tiny candle is lit from the huge Easter candle, lit at Easter to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the new Christian is burning a new light of God’s presence, received from Christ the light of the world. |
Contact the Vicar - 934 9338 - if you would like to request holy baptism for yourself or your child.
S Michael's Kelburn is an attractive traditional building that has meant much to many people over the years since it was built in 1920. Older residents as well as newcomers ask for a church funeral here to mark that connection or attraction.
The ministry of the priest is available to officiate at funerals. You may wish to discuss your funeral with the priest before it happens - it can be a positive feeling to choose your readings and the hymns you want sung, or the music you would like played on the organ or on the CD player.
The dominant note these days is positive. The large Paschal (Easter) candle is lit at the head of the casket in front of the altar. This burning candle reminds us of our Christian baptism, when the light of Christ was given to us; and shows that the light of Christ guides us through the door of death into the loving presence of God our creator and redeemer.
The casket is sprinkled with holy water, to mark the tears of parting at the rivers of death, and to mark the passing of a Christian person, baptised into the waters of new life.
The service offered here is intended to commend the dead person to God in confidence and faith, to celebrate the life and to comfort the mourners.
The parish hall behind the S Michael's Church is often available for your family and friends to have refreshments together on site after a funeral. George Lychnos (475 8380) the proprietor of the adjacent 'Kelburn Cafe and Grill' is willing to negotiate the full catering of the refreshments.

Do you wish to know the healing touch of Christ on the broken edges of your life? As an expression of God's loving care for us, the church offers this sacrament of holy anointing, with prayer for wholeness. We have a woman lay minister who is also licensed by the bishop of Wellington to administer this holy sacrament.
Contact the Vicar - 934 9338 or the lay minister, Frances Rabone - 472 8116.
Do you wish to find peace in your heart from the blockages of sin and distress? The Anglican church provides a ministry of reconciliation to those who ask for help.
Life's stresses can build up a sense of block in our relationships with God and with other people. If you wish to have guidance in prayer and penitence before God, the priest is available to help you. This may be a formal confession to God, or an informal discussion and prayer. The seal of the confessional applies in all contexts.
How do we do this? Make an appointment to see the priest. Most people find it helpful to sit and talk privately with the priest first. Then, when we are ready, we are able to make a prayer to God in penitence. The person is given guidance and the blessing of forgiveness from God.
Contact the Vicar - 934 9338 - if you wish to explore this further.
Maybe you are housebound and would like to receive the Blessed Sacrament of the Body of Christ at your own home? Particularly at Easter and Christmas, we are ready to take the Sacrament to people at home so that you participate in the highlights of the Christian year. You might like to invite your family or friends to join you for such a sacred moment.

Regularly we have the ministry of healing, with the laying on of hands and anointing of those who come forward during the service. We pray that they may know Christ's healing touch to make them whole in body, mind, and spirit. For timing of the next service, or if you would like the ministry sooner, let the priest know.

The priest is in the office at 0900 Tuesday to Saturday. Should you wish to have a set time to talk with him ring for an appointment.

The priest is willing to visit people who invite him to do so. This can be a chance for us to get to know each other. Other times there is a pastoral need that you would like to talk about at home rather than in the office.
