House group starting
Two house groups are being started in the parish. The emphasis will be on discipleship based around Bible study and hospitality. The studies and discussion will be open and geared towards those of differing levels of faith (or non-faith). Please contact either Mark Edgecombe (021 204 3030), Emily Cotter (027 460 7532) or the Vicar for more details.
Interim volunteer administrator
An opportunity exists for someone to help with parish administration and accounts from now until the end of this year. This will require about four to six hours a week. Training will be given but practical and IT skills are required. Please see the Vicar if you are interested or can suggest someone who may be.
Global Mission Group Prayer Breakfast
On every first Tuesday of the month. Croissant, coffee, tea, fruit and juice are on offer from 7am. Prayer starts at 7:15 (latest) and we guarantee to get you to anywhere in the CBD by 8am. Come and pray for the global work of our church and mission partners.
New appointment: Parish and family worker
Loren Miller has begun part time work in St. Mic’s as Parish and Family Worker. Loren’s work will build on the foundations already laid by Mel McKenzie as Children’s and Family Ministry Coordinator. Additionally, Loren’s appointment represents a further step in joint ministry between SMK and the VUW Chaplaincy (where Loren is also working part time). The idea is that she will take initiatives in the parish in outreach to young families, developing a community outreach programme, overseeing our volunteer Sunday School and youth workers, and provide other support for the Vicar. At the chaplaincy end, she would do similar work within the university context.
Loren is 28 years old and has travelled widely. A graduate in chemistry, until last year she worked as a teacher. Loren has been attending SMK for the last year and has been actively involved in a number of areas-including Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner? You will no doubt hear more of Loren as the year progresses. Meantime, do make yourself known to her.
Martin & Lily Emo
Some of you will remember Lily and Martin Emo from when they spoke to us last year. Martin and Lily were both previously involved with AngChap and the early days of our Substance congregation. After a year of study at BCNZ, they are now to be CMS Mission Partners and are departing for Nicaragua in Jan 2009 to work with the Council Of Protestant Churches of Nicaragua (CEPAD). Lily will be working in design and photography and Martin will be working in high school education.
Public lecture: the Atonement and redemptive violence
Tuesday 7 April, 7:30pm in St. Michael’s church. Dr Chris Marshall will talk on The Atonement – a consideration of redemptive violence in scripture and its impact on western society and culture. Chris is an engaging speaker and this promises to be a thought provoking address.
Burning Issues: Climate Change, Science, and Religion
5.40–7pm, Tuesday 10 March, Law School, Old Government Buildings LT 1, Pipitea Campus, Victoria University of Wellington
Victoria University’s Anglican chaplaincy is co-hosting, with VUW’s Institute of Policy Studies, a lecture entitled Burning Issues: Climate Change, Science, and Religion.
The lecture will be given by Professor Bob White of Cambridge University and will include opportunity to interact with Prof. White.
The Burning Issues: Why does scepticism persist around the idea that global climate change is caused by human activity? Such attitudes have been particularly prevalent in some conservative religious groupings. In this seminar Bob White will look at the scientific evidence for anthropogenic climate change, and will offer a theological and ethical analysis suggesting what Christians and other religious believers can contribute to offer to the debate. take climate change seriously in their faith and practice.
Professor Bob White is a Fellow of the Royal Society and Professor of Geophysics at Cambridge. He is also an Associate Director of the Faraday Institute, a centre that investigates the interface between science and theology. In 2007, Bob White co-authored a timely book Christianity, Climate Change, and Sustainable Living (SPCK).
